Out and About: Gilbert Road sewer being twinned

Columnist Grant McMillan has been photo-documenting this massive Metro Vancouver project.

Drivers who use Gilbert Road will be well aware of a massive construction project that is working its way north from the Lulu Island Treatment Plant near the Fraser River.

The project is primarily an essential upgrade for the sewer system that needs to be done to meet our growing population. The current sewer system is at full capacity.

The large project is made more challenging because of the presence of underground utilities that must be carefully managed.

The City of Richmond and Metro Vancouver are responsible for this construction, which involves the replacement and twinning of the Gilbert Trunk Sewer. This second sewer line is being constructed next to the existing pipe.

The Metro Vancouver website states that “The new pipe is designed specifically to minimize backups and overflows and accommodate future growth in the City of Richmond.”

The project is fascinating to watch (as a carefully distanced, out-of-the-way pedestrian) because we rarely see this kind of heavy equipment in use in our city.

And the skill sets of the workers involved is especially impressive.

Metro Vancouver has advised that the huge undertaking is being done in phases.

The first phase from Bridgeport Pump Station to the intersection of Gilbert and Blundell Road is complete.

The south and central sections are expected to be finished in 2025, all going well.

Inevitably, there is some disruption and rerouting of traffic and drivers need to take care and follow the directions of the traffic control persons.
