Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG) has announced this year’s winners for its Volunteers Are Stars Awards.

The non-profit charity held its annual celebration online to recognize these volunteers during National Volunteer Week on April 27.

Four winners were selected by a panel of judges from a total of 18 individual and group nominees.

“Are the winners brilliant? Absolutely,” said Ed Gavsie, president and CEO of RCRG.

“But so are the nominees. Every volunteer up for an award has made a significant contribution to the Richmond community, and is a star in their own right.”

Dawn Thomson, who works with Special Olympics BC and the Salvation Army Rotary Hospice House received the Nova Star Award for creating a more caring and inclusive community.

The Constellation Award was presented to the South Arm United Church Outreach Committee for being an exceptional volunteer group.

The committee has hosted monthly dinners for residents living with HIV and AIDS.

Furthermore, UBC medical student Li Qing Wang was recognized for her outstanding volunteer work as a youth and was awarded the Shooting Star Award.

Tammi Belfer, board president of the Richmond Women’s Resource Centre, was the recipient of the Star of Richmond Award, which recognizes her lifelong commitment to volunteering.

“We’d like to thank the recipients and nominees for the profound difference they’ve made in our community,” said Gavsie.

“Our sincere hope is that next year’s event can be held in person, so we can celebrate Richmond’s volunteer spirit together.”
