Last week, the BC Community Achievement Awards honoured Richmond volunteers Michael McCoy and Wayne Duzita for their years of community service and contributions.

The awards, to be presented April 29, are designed to recognize individuals who have made a significant contribution, either as volunteers or in the course of their work, by giving back to their communities and contributing to the betterment of society.

For the past 30 years, McCoy has been the executive director of Touchstone Family Association, an organization that offers a variety of supportive family services.

McCoy said he was honoured to be recognized. “I am only one of the thousands of people that volunteer,” he said.

McCoy said Touchstone’s Front Porch Program, which provides barrier-free counseling, is a project he is particularly proud to be a part of, and praises the program for its service.

Duzita, who has also been awarded for his more than 50 years of volunteering and community service said, “I am honoured and blessed to be recognized for something I enjoy doing.”

Duzita focuses on helping programs that support challenged youth.

Trinity Western University Advisory Council, Richmond Christmas Fund, Tourism Richmond, Richmond Olympic Oval Corporation, YVR Golf for Kids, Canuck Place Foundation and Canuck Place Hospice all have been beneficiaries of Duzita’s selfless contributions to British Columbia.

“I get a lot out of it,” said Duzita. “It brings together people with different skills and talents for a common cause.”
