Combining learning and outdoor fun is always a good idea, which makes gardening the best thing to do at school these days.
Brighouse elementary school, for example, has quite the robust school garden growing these days. Students can often be found hard at work, learning about practical day-to-day aspects of gardening, as well as plant biology.
What makes this garden so special is that it also includes space for the community at large, from the Richmond Gardens neighbourhood.
Presently, leafy greens are being grown by children of all ages. Kale, lettuce and spinach are popular harvests and students will have another month to enjoy the bounty before summer holidays, at which point community members can help tend to the plots.
The “green” culture at Brighouse is complemented by the fact the school is LEED Gold, meaning it’s extremely energy efficient.
