With global warming trends giving us dryer than normal springs and hotter than average summer months, the need to find ways to cool off in the city is getting more critical.

Thankfully, being surrounded by water, those on Lulu Island can head for a beach to dip their toes in the water, or take a stroll along the waterfront or dyke to enjoy a cool breeze off the water.

But what if you’re in the city centre and are in dire need to drop the temperature a few degrees and still be in the great outdoors?

Public swimming pools are an option. But if you don’t want to go through all the fuss of getting the kids into their bathing suits and finding their swim towels and goggles and want some immediate relief, one of the newest, publicly accessible fountains at the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport on Sea Island is one of the best places to shake off the heat for a while.

Its fountains are embedded into the pavement in one of the outlet mall’s plazas and are set to shoot up jets of cool water on a programmed basis so you can roam in and out of the sprays.

Lights set into the ground among the fountain heads add to the fun in the dusk and evening hours.

Access to the area doesn’t cost a penny – neither does parking outside the mall.

The McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport is at 7899 Templeton Station Rd., a short walk from the Templeton SkyTrain station on the Canada Line.
