Summer reading clubs for all ages are underway at the Richmond Public Libraries and on Thursday, Canadian author Carmen Aguirre will do a reading of her memoir, Mexican Hooker #1 and My Other Roles Since the Revolution.
From 7 to 8:30 p.m., Aguirre, who was born in Chile, will answer questions about her writing, acting and life experiences as part of the library’s adult summer reading challenge.
Aguirre’s story is certainly a memorable one, as she was just six years old when her family fled Chile in December 1973, three months after the overthrow of the country’s president. Her family landed in California and then made their way to Vancouver, where they were accepted as political refugees.
Mexican Hooker #1 and My Other Roles Since the Revolution is Aguirre’s second book, published in 2016. The story talks about her childhood, her career and the way she faced the trauma of being attacked by one of Canada's most feared rapists when she was 13.
