From bicycles and rail to cars and buses, take a virtual trip through Richmond’s transportation history with on-site local experts at the All Aboard! event on Saturday, Aug. 6 from 12 to 4 p.m. at the Steveston Interurban Tram Building.
Travel back in time on board the 104-year-old Interurban Tramcar 1220, located next to Steveston Park, near the northeast corner of Moncton Street and No. 1 Road. The historic tramcar once provided commuter rail service between Steveston and Vancouver as part of the popular Interurban rail service, which operated from 1905 to 1958. Visitors can view historical exhibits that tell the story of the beloved Interurban service and explore the interior of the tramcar.
Other activities at this free event include having your photo taken on a rail speeder that once carried workmen to inspect and repair rail lines and climbing aboard a vintage bus to view the Transit Museum Society’s collection that covers the evolution of local transportation from horse-drawn carriages to modern day cars and buses. Then enjoy children’s crafts and cool traditional bluegrass music courtesy of The Lonesome Town Painters.
This event is also a perfect time to share travel ideas with or ask transportation-related questions of the City as staff from the Transportation Division will be onsite. Also, learn about transit alternatives across Richmond with help from members of the Active Transportation Committee and don’t miss registering your bicycle at the RCMP workshop near the tram building in Steveston Park.
