Richmond city council approved almost $10 million for the city's public library as part of the 2020 budget process, which will go towards new hires and technology.

The Richmond Public Library (RPL) launched curbside pickup and drop-off services on Wednesday.

RPL's new pickup and return system was put in place to ensure physical distancing and safety procedures are followed while the library begins restoring their services.

Library staff started contacting customers with existing holds on books to arrange contactless pickup at the Brighouse location starting on Wednesday, May 20.

“As we begin to restore library services, I share the library board’s perspective that a slow and steady approach is the right way to proceed for our community and the library,” said Susan Walters, chief librarian at RPL.

Meanwhile, library patrons can keep their books until the extended due date of July 31 with no fines being charged.

Book returns for the Brighouse branch are now open daily.

Cambie, Ironwood and Steveston branches will be open Monday at 10 a.m. to Thursday at 4:30 p.m. starting May 25.
