Community Safety Volunteer of the Year:

A/Const. Darren Bygrave

Darren Bygrave has been an auxiliary constable with the Richmond RCMP since 2009. As an auxiliary constable, he is a uniformed volunteer, sworn as a peace officer, who is trained to assist regular RCMP members in any situation.

Bygrave has averaged 700 hours a year in volunteer service, and has been the most active auxiliary constable for the past two years in the community policing and crime prevention programs. He has had a critical role in providing police presence at almost every large community event in Richmond last year, often working multiple shifts back-to-back.

Bygrave has also become a valuable contributor to the marine patrol and coastal watch programs in Richmond.

Additionally, Bygrave regularly assists regular members on the general duty watches, averaging three to four shifts per month.

When there have been emergency call-outs of the auxiliary constables to assist, he is one of the first members to be on duty.

When the call came for assistance at the plane crash on Sea Island last year, Bygrave had already left his day job and was on route to provide whatever assistance he could.

Always willing to perform any duty asked while maintaining a superior level of professionalism, Bygrave has quickly become a leader within Richmond's RCMP auxiliary constable program.
