On Aug. 2, 2011, at approximately 12: 49 p.m., BCAS paramedics were dispatched to a residence in Richmond where a sixyear-old had been shot.

On entering the residence, paramedics Clint Wapler, Frank Bosk and district supervisor Jeoff Moffat found a small boy who had been shot in the chest with a .22 calibre rifle.

The young patient was in obvious severe distress. Immediately, the paramedics began assessing and treating the small patient with the assistance of members from Richmond Fire Rescue (RFR).

The room was cluttered and the boy was resting on the floor under a desk next to the doorway, which made assessment, treatment and extrication more difficult.

BCAS dispatch advised the BC Children's Hospital of the status of the patient and the approximate estimated time of arrival.

As the patient was being removed by stretcher from the residence by the first crew, critical care paramedics Darren Chyzzy and Brian Reichert arrived on scene.

The patient was immediately placed into their ambulance and treated with advanced life support measures.

Due to the quick response and the advanced pre-hospital care treatments by these paramedics, the child was treated in the field and safely brought to the awaiting emergency team at BC Children's Hospital.

The child endured a long recovery process at the hospital, but he was eventually released and able to return to his home abroad.

By last reports from the family, he made a full recovery and is doing very well with exciting tales to tell of his vacation in Canada.
