McNair secondary student Maria Encarnacion was named the 2014 RichCity Idol Thursday evening, besting nine other inspiring competitors.
Co-lead producer Lorie Leung said the event, held at Gateway Theatre, was a resounding success.
“It was very successful, we actually finished 20 minutes early which hasn’t been done in a couple years. For us to pull off a show so well without many bumps was so amazing,” said Leung.
About 400 people attended the event that saw high school students show off their artistic, musical skills.
Maria was voted by the judges to the top-five and then won her way to the top after the crowd voted for her.
In her last performance she sang All of Me by John Legend on a grand piano.
Suani Rincon, a student of Palmer secondary, took second place for her rendition of Rihanna’s Stay.
“She did an incredible job. I saw the most growth in her and Maria,” said Leung.
