Wildcats crowned Richmond Grade 8 champions

McMath Wildcats celebrate their win over McRoberts in Thursday's Richmond Grade 8 Girls championship game. Both teams move onto this week's South Fraser Championships, hosted by the Strikers.

The McMath Wildcats Grade 8 girls basketball team continued its impressive season Thursday by capturing the Richmond Championship with a 49-24 victory over arch-rival McRoberts Strikers. 

All 16 players contributed to getting the win with an emphasis on outstanding and relentless team defence.

The team features Daisy Mavis, Emi Nishi, Aaria Johal, Elia Pantoja, Sarah Carkner, Laurel Forgeron, Elle Sweetman, Amelia Doucette, Claire Pogor,  Kaila Kusec, Olivia Gomez, Sofia Lemaire, Serra Lemaire, Tiana Maedel, Emily Trueman and Brooke Viccars.

The girls are coached by Paul Teodosio, Inder Johal and Tim Carkner.

The Wildcats will take their 31-6 overall record as the city’s top seed into this week’s South Fraser Championships, with a bye directly to Tuesday’s quarter-finals. 

The 16-team tournament, which will feature the top teams from in Richmond, Delta and Surrey, will be hosted by McRoberts. The Strikers will be joined by third place finisher Steveston-London and the fourth place MacNeill Ravens.

The title game goes on Thursday at 5 p.m.
