The McRoberts Strikers Grade 8 girls volleyball team is continuing the school’s rich tradition of excellence in the sport.

The Strikers were crowned Richmond champions earlier this month — highlighted by a pair thrilling wins on their way to the title.

The girls quickly dispatched the MacNeill Ravens 3-0 in their quarter-final match-up, setting the stage for a final four meeting with second place finishers Burnett.

The back-and-forth battle came down to a fifth set and the Breakers looked poised to prevail with a 14-9 lead. However, McRoberts came storming back, fending off several match points, and eventually pulled out a dramatic 17-15 win.

They took the momentum into the championship game against the heavily favoured McMath Wildcats who were looking to conclude a perfect season against city opponents.

The Strikers took the opening two sets and went on to complete the upset with a 3-1 victory.

The Strikers line-up included: Kyla Cabral, Jenelle Dee, Rona Dizayee, Ella Fast, Mia Goula, Richelle Guilas, Jeena Hermano, Andie Israel, Kayla Linden, Francesca Krefta, Kya Thackwray, Brenna Ward, Veronika Wu and Ella Zhu.

The girls were coached by Emma Hodgins, Jamie Muller, Taryn Hill, Izzy Vergara, Tamara Dee, Ashley Mori and Ms. Stone-Charlton.
