Sharks & Strikers fall in round of 16 at provincials

McRoberts Strikers and Steveston-London Sharks have bowed out of medal contention in their respective tiers at the BC High School Boys Volleyball Championships after round-of-16 losses on Thursday.

Both teams were turn their attention to placement play over the final two days of action at the Langley Events Centre to conclude their seasons.

The city champion Strikers fell in straight sets (25-23, 25-16, 25-21) to Victoria’s Pacific Christian Pacers in the AA tier playdowns.

McRoberts entered the championships seeded ninth but dropped power pool matches to Duchess Park, Surrey Christian and St. Michaels University on Wednesday to slide down to No. 12 and set-up the playoff match-up with the No. 5 seed Pacers.

It was a similar path for Steveston-London in the AAA draw after they went 0-3 in their power pool group and had to win an additional playoff game to advance to the main draw.

The 12th seeded Sharks defeated No. 20 Mt. Baker from Cranbrook 3-1 (25-16, 25-22, 19-25, 25-21) to earn the opportunity to take on No. 5 Okanagan Mission. The Kelowna school won in straight sets — 25-19, 25-13, 25-21.

The McRoberts Strikers and McMath Wildcats will begin their playoff matches on Friday in the girls AAA championships, also taking place at the LEC.
