The 40th annual Nations Cup is still a little over a month away and the popular summer soccer tournament has already produced a big goal.

On Monday, Nations Cup Soccer Society president Jeff Wilson presented a $2,500 cheque to Alexa Loo of the KidSport Richmond chapter.

The outstanding program — that provides financial assistance to help city children to play organized sports —  has been the Nations Cup Society’s charity of choice for about a decade.

The Nations Cup is recognized by players and spectators alike as one of the foremost amateur men's and women's soccer tournaments in Western Canada.

This year’s event takes place July 12-14 — one week earlier than normal with the city beginning preparations to install new field turf immediately after the tournament.
