Lukas Svejkovsky’s sophomore season in the Western Hockey League is off to an impressive start.
The 17-year-old former Seafair Minor standout scored on opening night and earned third star honours in helping the Vancouver Giants in a road weekend sweep of the Prince George Cougars.
Svejkovsky scored midway through the second period on opening night as the Giants skated to a 5-3 victory. They added a 4-1 triumph 24 hours later.
The Point Roberts native came through Seafair Minor while his father Yogi Svejkovsky was the association’s longtime development coach. The former NHLer is also skills coach with the Giants.
Lukas moved onto the Delta Hockey Academy for three season (Bantam Prep and Elite 15s) before signing with the B.C. Hockey League’s Wenatchee Wild while weighing his potential NCAA options. The 5-foot-9, 160-pounder then opted for the WHL last season and managed 26 points, including nine goals in 67 regular season games.
He added 13 more points in 22 playoff games in helping Vancouver reach game seven of the WHL finals. Now he’s poised to have an even bigger role. He doesn’t turn 18 until Nov. 28.
Svejkovsky was the Giants 36th overall pick in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft.
The Giants will take on Portland in their home opener Friday (7:30 p.m.) at the Langley Events Centre.
