Jessica Jones' sophomore season at SFU is off to a terrific start, averaging 23 points per contest.

A career outing for a former McMath star led the Simon Fraser University women’s basketball team to an overtime win on Friday night.

Jessica Jones poured in 32 points as the hosts squeaked out a 81-79 victory over the Colorado Mountain Lions. It was the sophomore guard’s three-point basket with 11 seconds remaining that tied the game at 66-66 and forced the extra period.

She would add to her point total in overtime, trading baskets with Colorado’s Makenna Baker, before Ozioma Nwabuko’s free throws with less than a second remaining provided the difference.

Jones hit 11-of-20 shots, including six for 13 from three-point range, in her biggest outing yet at the university level. She also connected on four-of-six free throws in 31 minutes of playing time. She leads SFU (4-5) in scoring, averaging 23 points per game.

She took her career to the Burnaby Mountain campus after a superb high school run at McMath that was capped by a second place finish at the provincial AAA championships where she earned first team tournament honours. That went with her earlier Lower Mainland and Richmond MVP awards.

Two of her former teammates — Bobbi-Jo Colburn (Calgary) and Jessica Zawada (Fraser Valley) are also playing at the university level.
