12th annual Carkner Classic tips-off Thursday

Host Sharks welcome 14 other boys and girls teams

It could be an all-Richmond boys final at the Bob Carkner Memorial Classic if the host Sharks and Hugh Boyd can get through their respective brackets.

The 12th annual Bob Carkner Memorial Basketball Classic will feature 16 senior boys and girls teams doing battle starting on Thursday at Steveston-London Secondary School.

On the boys side, the host and 3A honourable mention Sharks will launch the action when they take on Ladner’s Delta Pacers at noon. Their side of the bracket also features Killarney and Valleyview from Kamloops.

The other side features city rival and No. 5 2A ranked Hugh Boyd facing Lord Byng in their opener, while Burnaby’s Byrne Creek takes on Windermere.

The semi-finals go at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m on Friday. The championship game is set for 7:15 p.m. on Saturday.

On the girls side, the Sharks will battle Burnsview from North Delta at 2 p.m. Other local flavour includes Cambie taking on South Delta and McRoberts facing John Oliver. Clayton Heights and North Delta round out the entries.

The girls’ semis are at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Friday. The title game goes at 5 p.m. Saturday.

The tournament is played in the memory of the popular former principal who passed away in 2009. He had a tremendous passion for the game and his grassroots youth programs were instrumental in basketball’s emergence in Richmond.
