Jenny Lee, a Central Richmond-based former teacher, recognized early on that her son Ethan was unique. “Ethan is very smart and has so much to say,” Jenny explains. “But when it came to reading and writing, he struggled.”

Ethan began his education in a local school program, but with independently driven work and a large class size, he fell behind. “He was in a class of 40 students and there just wasn’t enough support for him,” shares Jenny.

Suspecting dyslexia was involved, the Lees researched Fraser Academy, a school in Kitsilano, Vancouver, specializing in supporting students like Ethan. “Honestly, it’s one of the best schools for dyslexia in Canada,” says Jenny. “We’re so grateful to have it here.” Since joining Fraser Academy in Grade 3, Ethan has gone from struggling to thriving. “Now, he’s happy. He even looks forward to school every day,” smiles Jenny.

Dyslexia as a strength

Like many parents of children with dyslexia, Jenny initially faced challenges understanding how to help Ethan. “I home-schooled him for a year, but it was hard because I didn’t have the right training,” she admits. “But at Fraser, they teach in a way that just works for him.”

Dr. Vanessa Lapointe, a parenting educator, author and former psychologist, points out the potential of dyslexic learners, who make up one in five of the population. “Kids with dyslexia have these incredibly interesting brains with wonderful ways of seeing the world,” she says. “When they’re taught and supported in ways that honour who they are, they not only learn and grow but have the opportunity to be extraordinary.”

Fraser Academy is the only fully accredited independent day school in the Lower Mainland currently serving students in Grades 2 to 12, whose primary challenges are language-based learning differences such as dyslexia. It reframes dyslexia as a unique perspective, unlocking each student’s ability for innovative thinking and problem-solving. The school also eases the commute for Richmond-based families like Jenny’s—by offering a daily bus service from the Richmond Ice Centre.

“Finding the right fit with Fraser Academy has changed everything for Ethan,” says Jenny. “He feels understood and supported.”

Tailored learning that empowers

Fraser Academy uses the evidence-based Orton-Gillingham (OG) approach, a structured, multi-sensory way of teaching students with dyslexia how to master foundational literacy skills. “The regular one-on-one OG lessons have been a game-changer for my son,” says Jenny.

According to Colleen Chow, Fraser Academy’s executive director of Training & Learning, the approach is key to success. “Our specialized teachers take complex concepts and break them into manageable steps,” explains Colleen. “By reinforcing them, our students build competence, which in turn gives them confidence.”

Small class sizes of up to 12 further ensure personalized attention, allowing Ethan to flourish in an environment that meets him where he is. “At Fraser, the teachers genuinely care about each student and their growth,” adds Jenny.

A sense of belonging

Fraser Academy’s holistic approach doesn’t stop at academics. The school incorporates daily physical education. “PE classes every day, no matter the weather, are such a big deal for Ethan,” says Jenny. “It’s great for his focus and energy. He loves going outside and moving his body.”

Ethan has also joined the Track and Field Club, participating in competitions that connect him with kids outside his class. “He’s so proud to be a part of the Fraser Mustangs,” says Jenny. “It really boosts his confidence.”

Jenny notes how much her son enjoys having friends across different grades. “The older students are like mentors for him,” she says. “It’s such a supportive community, not just for the kids but for the parents, too. We all feel very connected.”

Surrounded by peers who also learn differently, students gain pride in their individuality. “There’s strength in seeing other students thrive despite similar challenges,” explains Colleen. “It’s incredibly motivating and inspiring.”

Transforming lives

Founded in 1982, Fraser Academy’s results reflect its ability to meet the needs of students who often struggle elsewhere. The school boasts a 95% post-secondary attendance rate, with graduates excelling in diverse fields such as entrepreneurship, creative arts, engineering and healthcare.

Head of School Alison Wall highlights Fraser’s impact. “We see students arrive having experienced academic failure from watching their peers progress while they’re left behind,” she says. “By the time they graduate, they’re confident, capable and thriving.”

A lifeline for families

Fraser Academy’s mission extends beyond academics. Financial accessibility is a priority, with the school offering several options, including bursaries funded by generous donors, sibling discounts and guidance on obtaining grants and applicable tax credits. “With tuition relief of up to 70%, what we provide is accessible to all,” says Alison.

The school also serves the broader community through FAx, an outreach program offering in-person and online learner support, consulting services, Summer Boost Camp and free early literacy screening.

Fraser Academy offers not only a supportive environment for families but also a sense of hope. “This place has completely changed our family dynamic,” says Jenny. “Before, we were so stressed about Ethan’ education. Now, we feel like he’s in the right place and we’re all happier because of it.”
