A whole-child approach to early learning

St. Dulwich Academy is more than a daycare, it’s a thriving early learning centre designed to support children in becoming curious, confident and compassionate individuals. Located in a welcoming space with five thoughtfully designed classrooms and three large playgrounds, the academy offers a Reggio Emilia-inspired, emergent curriculum that allows each child to grow at their own pace.

Our curriculum helps prepare children for success in both school and life by fostering curiosity, critical thinking, collaboration and a lifelong love of learning,” says Inna Kozieva, Manager at St. Dulwich Academy. “Rooted in the belief that children are capable, creative and full of potential, our approach empowers children to take an active role in their learning through inquiry, exploration and meaningful experiences.”

Guided by curiosity and real-life learning

At the heart of St. Dulwich Academy’s philosophy is a commitment to meaningful, play-based learning guided by the British Columbia Early Learning Framework. Educators plan experiences around the children's interests, strengths and natural curiosities, creating environments that reflect real-life contexts.

“At St. Dulwich Academy, we place a strong focus on emotional development and self-regulation because they are essential foundations for lifelong well-being, learning and social success,” Kozieva explains. “By encouraging reflection, collaboration and respect for others’ perspectives, our curriculum nurtures not only academic readiness but also the emotional intelligence and resilience needed to thrive throughout life.”

Whether participating in art, group storytelling or exploring nature in the outdoor spaces, children are encouraged to communicate and discover through hands-on, engaging activities.

Building emotional intelligence and self-regulation

Emotional development is a key focus at St. Dulwich Academy. Teachers model and guide healthy emotional expression, helping children learn how to manage frustration, navigate social conflict and build resilience.

“When children are supported in understanding and managing their emotions, they are better able to build positive relationships, develop empathy and navigate social interactions with confidence,” Kozieva emphasizes. “Self-regulation—managing emotions, behaviour and attention—is fostered through predictable routines, nurturing educator-child relationships and play-based experiences that build problem-solving and resilience.”

Strong family partnerships and community connection

St. Dulwich believes learning is most meaningful when families are active participants. Parents are considered co-partners in their child’s educational journey, with open communication, shared decision-making and involvement encouraged throughout the year.

“We believe that families are a child’s most important teachers and we deeply value the partnership between home and school,” says Kozieva. “We actively engage families in their child’s learning journey by fostering open, respectful and ongoing communication through daily updates, photos, conversations and scheduled meetings.

Families are invited to share their cultures, traditions and insights, which helps us create inclusive environments that reflect the identities of the children. By thoughtfully incorporating family voices into curriculum planning and classroom experiences, each child feels seen, valued and connected.

“We also encourage family participation in special events, workshops and classroom activities to strengthen relationships and build community,” adds Kozieva. “We value working collaboratively with families to support each child’s individual development and to nurture a strong sense of belonging.”

With its nurturing educators, open-ended curriculum and spacious learning environment, St. Dulwich Academy offers a safe and inspiring place for children to thrive. Every day, children are supported in developing the skills, confidence and empathy they’ll need to succeed in school and beyond.
