The Editor,
Re: "Six-storey mixed-use development proposed for Richmond's London Landing area"
As residents of the south Steveston area, we are deeply concerned about the proposal to develop the former fishermen’s net storage site at the south end of No. 2 Road, creating another 223 units of residential space, plus associated facilities.
There are many issues here, one of the main ones being a significant increase in traffic on a road that has already become too busy.
Not only would there be more traffic from residents of the new development, but all their deliveries, visitors, service vehicles, etc.
And what about sufficient infrastructure to support all of this, e.g., plumbing, electrical and other utilities?
This has the makings of a nightmare scenario!
This area has long been an important one for the fishing industry, particularly as a net storage facility for many years.
Shouldn't it be kept that way, rather than stuffing yet more people into a limited space that can ill-afford to support them and all their associated activities and needs?
If anything, the original proposal to build a storage facility would be far more preferable than yet another residential development.
We sincerely hope that our concerns can be brought forward to city council, and that this misguided proposal can be stopped before it can proceed further.
