The virus situation has affected most parts of life, and usually for the worst. However, always the optimist, I'd like to present one thing that has improved right now while we all find ourselves in this terrible time. I've never seen the streets of Richmond devoid of most of its traffic, and as a result, there has never been a safer time to ride your bike around the city. And this got me thinking one day.
I was with my daughter, and we were talking about how if you had your learner's driver's license, this would be a great time to be able to learn to drive a car. The roads are empty most of the day, parking lots are vacant much of the time, and it's just safer to drive a car right now. This made me think of all the people I've talked to over the years, or who have written into the Richmond News saying that the reason they avoid riding a bike in our city is because of the traffic. They are scared to ride down streets, especially ones without dedicated bike lanes because they don't trust the motorists around them.
It's completely understandable, and no one would blame them for feeling that way. Riding on the roads takes a certain amount of courage, and the best way to build that courage is through experience, and there has never been a better time to to get that experience. With traffic levels so low, the vehicles that are out there have much better visibility of you, as well as room to manoeuvre around you. We have to hope that we never get this opportunity again, but I think if you've ever thought about riding on the road, but were too uneasy about giving it a try, you must take advantage of this opportunity.
As someone who does ride on the streets full time, whether there is a bike lane or not, how safe I feel on the roads these days is unprecedented. Think of the roads you've always wanted to ride on, maybe as a shortcut to work, or to friend's houses, and give them a try now. Get that experience, build that courage and become a confident rider in Richmond. Wear your helmet, be safe, and I hope everyone can find one positive opportunity in these coming times.
