Letters: Richmond drivers should just slow down

A Richmond News reader says drivers should make sure they have enough time to get to where they're going.

A Richmond News reader wants drivers to slow down on local roads.

Dear Editor,

Re: "Letters: New mom asks Richmond council to slow down traffic," Aug. 21, 2025 and "Letters: Re-engineer Richmond streets to make them safer," Aug. 27, 2025

Both letters from Meaghan Kristensen and Gurinder Purewal we’re both well spoken.

However, narrowing the driving lanes, curb extensions and adding speed bumps will not help the situation.

With cars getting wider, people may want to drive closer to the oncoming traffic to avoid possibly hitting the curbs.

As for speed bumps, that would not be beneficial to the fire trucks, police and especially ambulances that need to get to their calls.

They don’t have time to slow down to go over a speed bump if they are transporting patient(s) that could be in a life or death situation.

Drivers need to say to themselves, “what if it is my child or loved one who is walking on the sidewalk or trying to cross at a crosswalk.”

If people are rushing to get to an appointment, going to work or home, whatever it is, maybe you should give yourself extra time, leave a little bit earlier and drive the posted speed limit.
