Letters: We absolutely need more traffic enforcement in Richmond

A Richmond News reader believes more traffic enforcement in the city will save lives

Dear Editor,

Re: “Traffic studies not necessary,” Letters, March 3.

With respect to Mr. Neil Bruce’s recent letter, I have a good understanding of traffic safety issues myself.

There are three pillars to traffic safety: engineering, education and enforcement.

There is just so far that one can go with engineering and education alone, enforcement is an essential element of traffic safety.

Unfortunately, traffic enforcement is the unwanted guest of policing.

When there is a shortage anywhere in the agency, they draw from traffic resources.

Traffic gets attention when all other sections are satisfied.

How important is traffic enforcement?

Statistics Canada says that more than 33 people die every week on Canadian roads.

Every single death random and preventable.

Motorists who have driven the roads of Richmond are forced to agree with Mr. Bruce.

I would go so far as to say you bet your life, we need more traffic enforcement in Richmond.
