Dear Editor,
I've read recent letters about speeding in Richmond. While I agree it's a problem, I believe the deeper issue is the lack of traffic law enforcement.
Many drivers treat posted speed limits as suggestions rather than laws. This mindset has spread to other basic rules, like making a full stop before turning right on red. Without consistent enforcement, these bad habits are becoming the norm — so much so that following the law now feels out of step with how most people drive.
This week, while driving on No. 2 Road near Granville, I was tailgated and flashed with high beams for simply keeping pace with traffic — already above the limit. Another day, I was honked at for making a proper stop before turning right on No. 1 Road.
Enforcement shouldn't just be for social media posts. Regular patrols remind drivers of rules they've ignored or forgotten. Yet many violations — like misuse of high beams or fog lights, expired insurance, and driving with only daytime running lights (DRLs) at night — go unchecked.
If enforcement isn’t coming, perhaps someone can suggest how to deal with the constant glare from inconsiderate drivers’ high beams, both behind and ahead.
