Dear Editor,
Re: "Video: Steveston Super Grocer fire fills skies with plumes of smoke"
I stood in the rain in disbelief and watched my beloved Super Grocer burn to the ground. What a terrible loss. I will miss the attentive caring pharmacy staff, especially the painless COVID-19 and flu shots.
This is a loss felt outside our community, too. Family members drive from Tsawwassen for spices and ingredients conveniently available all in one place.
A 95-year-old relative takes the bus from Ladner, just to get Super Grocer's special cuts of meat. When was the last time you saw tripe, pig's feet, liver, heart and kidney at Save-On Foods?
Another relative from Nanaimo visits the Super Grocer cheese department, and me, in that order.
I have happy memories of a relative from England standing in Super Grocer's condiment aisle, paralyzed, realizing there is more than one brand of soy sauce.
Super Grocer's affordability helped me raise two hungry teenagers on a single salary.
This little independent grocery store, within walking distance and reasonably priced, played a part in my decision to move to Steveston more than 20 years ago.
I hope to see it rebuilt.
