Letters: City made wrong turn with Steveston traffic changes

Dear Editor,

Re: "Pedestrian Steveston a complete turn-off," Letters, Aug. 6

I’d like to salute Tyson Riverdale for so quickly speaking out against the “pedestrian” experiment that’s going on in Steveston right now.

I experienced this situation during the week of Aug. 2 on Moncton Street. To begin with, I wasn’t expecting this to exist. I wanted to turn right off a side street but Moncton had become one-way in the other direction, so I had to turn left.

I was then confronted by the strangest street arrangement I have ever seen in my 50 years of driving. Moncton was not only one-way, but also one lane, as both curb lanes had been blocked off so pedestrians and bicyclists could move more freely on both sides of the road. Cars were allowed to parallel park against the red cones, leaving only one lane for drivers.

I can accept limited closures on Bayview Ave on a statutory holiday but not the main street in Steveston and not in the configuration it is now.

Last, but definitely not least, I’m disabled and I need to park close to the merchants I want to visit. Trying to access them in the current setup won’t work for me. I don’t think we were thought of!
