Letter: Young Richmond cyclist shows us the way

Is this a cycling city? It depends where you ride. Cruising along the dyke is lovely, but watch out for No. 3 Road. If cycling is to become a truly viable means of transportation in Richmond, a more comprehensive initiative is needed, according to many advocates. September, 2013.

Dear Editor,

Re: “I don’t want to break the law,” Letters, Oct. 12

In a recent letter, elementary school student William Li said, “But there was one person who honked at me, like I was doing something wrong, which I wasn’t.”

I am shocked that elementary school students are being put in danger due to the lack of bike lanes, as well as bad and ill-informed drivers. Do we have to wait until some young students are killed or injured before we act?

William is showing us the way forward when he states, “I would like to ask the city to put more bike lanes on major roads, and increase knowledge of biking laws to the public.”

I would also like to ask the Richmond News to do some journalistic research on bicycling accidents and dangerous locations in Richmond.
