Letter: I don't want to break the law

Dear Editor,

As an elementary school student, I bike a lot. To school, to parks, etc.

According to BikeSense, the British Columbia Bicycle Operator’s Manual, it is illegal for cyclists to bike on sidewalks, unless permitted by official signs.

But in past years — for example, two years ago — during my year-end bike trip with my class at Jessie Wowk Elementary, we had to go on the sidewalk, if there was no bike lane, for “safety reasons.” This should not be happening.

A while ago, I was biking on Westminster Highway. There are no bike lanes, so I had to bike on the road. There were some people merging to other lanes to avoid me, which was very kind.

But there was one person who honked at me, like I was doing something wrong, which I wasn’t.

I would like to ask the City of Richmond to put more bike lanes on major roads, and increase knowledge of biking laws to the public, as it would make biking safer and more enjoyable for all, as biking is a very good form of exercise.
