Letter: Former tram lines should be saved

A Richmond News reader discusses the feasibility of reinstalling the Steveston tram along its original route.

Colin, you are not the first to suggest the tram be reinstalled along its original route. It has come up multiple times over the years.

However past city councils decided to build 15 homes over the original route along Railway, from Garry Street.

City council was lambasted for allowing that to happen as it destroyed the route from being used as the future Richmond tram.

The other route option that was removed was taking the tram down Railway Avenue to Britannia Shipyards. This would require 23 homes and the community gardens to be removed.

Cities have learned that former rail lines make excellent transportation corridors, and in highly developed areas are the only option available. Both Richmond and Vancouver should keep these areas in reserve for that future purpose.
