Letter: Bring back our evening library family time

Open letter to Richmond Library Board Members,

I am writing out of concern for the decline in library services, namely at the Cambie branch.

My family and I have a weekly routine to go there either before or after dinner on Friday evenings.

Over the years, we have gotten to know the staff, and we take out books on a weekly basis.

I am greatly disappointed and frustrated with the recent decision to change the Friday hours at the Cambie branch to no longer be open during the evenings.

As working parents with two children, it is not possible to visit the Cambie library from Monday to Thursday when we live in Hamilton, with extremely limited library service and selection.

Cambie also has some specialty books, such as the manga books that are hand-picked by the Cambie staff.

We have visited the other branches, but often walk away empty-handed.

I feel that the Richmond Public Library plays a very important role in helping to raise the next generation of readers and to provide important face-to-face contact in the ever-changing world of information technology.

As a public educator, I know that visiting the library is vital to our family life.

I implore you to maintain Friday evening hours so that Friday to Sunday library hours are maximized.

The Cambie library is not situated in a particularly affluent area, with mixed housing, and I see many regular customers using the library services at these hours.

Thank you for your consideration.

Andrea Lee
