The Editor,
I am a strong proponent of the pedestrian scramble at Moncton Street and No. 1 Road in Steveston. I also agree with the "no right turn on red" law.
However, there is a big problem in the programming of the control lights at that intersection. Once the lights have turned green for cars travelling north and south on No. 1 Road, the pedestrian control lights allow pedestrians to cross Moncton Street travelling north and south.
When is a driver supposed to turn right?
I have also seen the same programming problem for traffic travelling east and west on Moncton Street.
In the summer when pedestrian traffic thickens, we will have cars and people vying for rights of way at No. 1 Road and Moncton Street.
I thought the scramble was meant to alleviate that.
Why not have the pedestrian scramble allow enough time for older, less mobile pedestrians to finish crossing before the light changes, then allow vehicle traffic to move, each direction in turn, and then the scramble again?
Keep it safe and simple.
