Column: September wine recommendations

Release of the Bordeaux 2018 in local liquor stores
sauvignon wine column
The Josh Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 and 2019 vintages are available at B.C. liquor stores so affordable way to get a vertical tasting of this wine

Each month, there are hundreds of wines on sale at B.C. Liquor Stores.   Hopefully, some of you have saved money in buying some nice wines by following my wine recommendations in the past few months.  Here are a few good buys for you this month:

Trimbach 2018 Riesling – wines from the Alsace region are some of the best food pairing wines.  Trimbach is a producer with a long history of quality winemaking.  Their Riesling is dry and pairs very well with seafood dishes.  This wine is on sale this month from $34.99 to $32.99, and you can see my review of this wine in a video.

Muga 2016 Rioja Reserve – Bodegas Muga is a family-run winery established in 1932.  This is a red wine from the Rioja region in Spain that is made with the Tempranillo grape.  I would recommend pairing this wine with meat in heavy sauce or pulled pork dishes.  The wine is on sale this month from $30.99 to $26.99.

Chave 2018 Cotes du Rhone Selection Mon Couer – this is your opportunity to taste this winery’s quality and winemaking excellence at an affordable price.  Chave is mostly known for their wines from Northern Rhone, but this wine is from the Southern Rhone region of Cotes du Rhone. Chave selects grapes from their preferred grape growers in this region to make a wine that is ready to drink immediately.  This wine is a blend of predominantly Grenache grapes with some Syrah grapes.  Get ready for a high alcohol and fruit-intense wine.  It’s on sale this month from $28.99 to $26.49.

Josh Cellars 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon – Josh Cellars was created in 2008.  What started out as small family-based operations have now grown into a wine brand that sells over 1 million cases of wine a year. Their Cabernet Sauvignon is produced from grapes sourced throughout California.  Both the 2018 and 2019 are available at B.C. liquor stores, on sale this month from $19.99 to $17.99 so it is an affordable way to create a vertical tasting of this wine.

I also wanted to make some comments on the Bordeaux 2018 release occurring at the B.C. Liquor Stores this month.  Unfortunately, I find the prices for the 2018 Bordeauxs quite expensive.  2018 was a great vintage for Bordeaux, but this is most important to wine collectors or those in the wine business.  For normal consumers, I believe you are better off buying the more affordable 2017 Bordeaux vintage, which was not rated as highly but will be much less expensive and drink earlier.  B.C. Liquor Stores still have a good selection of 2017 Bordeauxs in stock, so you can compare the 2017 vintage with the 2018 vintage yourself.  Consumers can also wait for the 2019 Bordeaux vintage, which will be released next year.  I expect that the 2019 vintage will be priced much like the 2017 vintage, given these wines were purchased by retailers in 2020, during the height of the COVID pandemic.

For those who want to splurge on the more expensive Bordeaux 2018 wines offered, please see my review of the 2018 Bordeaux pre-order wines on my Youtube channel, where I provide my full breakdown of what I would recommend buying from the 2018 Bordeaux vintage.

Until next time, happy drinking!
