Richmond residents will have a new fitness centre to launch into their New Year’s resolutions. The expansive fitness centre on the second floor of the Minoru Centre for Active Living will open on Jan 1.

The 8,500-square-foot fitness centre — with a 1,900-square-foot studio for classes — and the aquatic centre have been sitting idle because of a crack in one of the pools.

Meanwhile, the seniors centre has been in full swing since March.

While the pool is currently being fixed, the city is opening the fitness centre to the public with a soft launch on the first day of 2020.

The fitness centre has 37 pieces of equipment to get the heart pumping, including treadmills, stair climbers, elliptical machines and indoor bicycles.

There are also a variety of weight machines and free weights for strengthening and bodybuilding.

A custom-built area for core strengthening includes a surfboard-inspired balancing board, called the Queenax.

The new fitness centre will also have an “upper body arm ergometer,” which is like a stationary bicycle for your arms, and a recumbent cross-trainer.

The fitness studio will offer more than 30 classes per week, for example, total-body conditioning.

There will be monthly and annual memberships to the gym as well as 10-visit card and drop-in passes. Drop-in prices are $7.25 for adults and $5.90 for youth and seniors.

The fitness centre will be open Monday to Saturday 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays and statutory holidays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
