Update: Richmond fire at waste facility on Thursday

A Richmond waste facility was on fire on Thursday afternoon. The facility, located on Gilbert Road near the south dyke, was seen emitting black smoke from far away.

A Richmond waste facility was on fire on Thursday afternoon.

The facility, located on Gilbert Road near the south dyke, was seen emitting black smoke from far away.

Tim Wilkinson, fire chief of Richmond Fire-Rescue, said a shed roughly 25 by 40 feet inside the building was on fire, but was put out quickly after receiving a report on it..

"There was a significant fire inside the building, but nothing inside the building was impacted," said Wilkinson, adding that the additional services and cleaning up are being done.

He added that a large amount of sodium bisulfate, a hazardous material, was also in the room but is now safe and secure at this time.

No injuries were were reported.
