Garden City Road near Cambie Road has re-opened after a police incident has ended.
On Thursday afternoon, Richmond RCMP responded to reports of a man threatening to burn down his residence.
RCMP said they responded to the call around 1:30 p.m. to the man’s residence to find him with a knife to his own throat.
“Officers immediately employed crisis intervention de-escalation techniques, however, the male retreated into a room with the weapon,” said Cpl. Adriana Peralta, spokesperson with the Richmond RCMP.
One RCMP officer, who is part of the Lower Mainland Crisis Negotiation Team, has secured the residence for the safety of the man and surrounding neighbours, according to Peralta.
The Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team is also at the scene.
Northbound and southbound lanes on Garden City Road near Cambie Road are closed. The public is asked to avoid the area.
The situation in the 4200 block of Garden City Rd. has ended. Blocked off areas have been reopened.
