More people than ever before are taking transit throughout Metro Vancouver, and Richmond saw the second-highest growth in bus boardings in the region last year.

From 2017 to 2018, the number of people who made a trip by bus in Richmond and South Delta grew by 8.8 per cent.

TransLink released its annual ridership numbers Thursday, and between 2017 and 2018 reported its biggest single-year jump in ridership ever. Boardings grew by 7.1 per cent across the system.

“Ridership is exploding, and our region is growing,” Mayors’ Council chair Jonathan X. Coté said in a news release. “If we are going to cure congestion, we need to invest in both new transportation infrastructure and service expansion to make commutes quicker and easier now, and into the future.”

The 99 B Line between UBC and Vancouver was again the most travelled bus route, with 17,141,000 boardings in 2018. None of Richmond’s bus routes were among the region’s top 10 busiest.

Richmond’s SkyTrain stations are also relatively uncongested, not being mentioned in the top 10 busiest stations either.
