Richmond city council is considering mandatory masks in all city-owned and -run buildings.

The motion for a mask policy was brought to committee meeting on Tuesday afternoon by Coun. Bill McNulty and staff said they would bring back a report to council later.

Questions brought up by councillors included whether this policy would be both inside and outside.

Coun. Michael Wolfe said some people might seek relief from wearing a mask in a courtyard space where no one else is present.

Coun. Linda McPhail pointed out if an employer makes masks mandatory, they need to provide them.

Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie said the points brought up by council highlighted the complexity of the issue of masks.

“It’s an easy question to ask, it’s complex to answer,” Brodie said.

The motion passed unanimously with the staff report expected back within a month.
