Residents of Richmond complex evacuated due to fire

Richmond Fire-Rescue and medical personnel responded to a fire in one of the Regency Park Towers on Minoru Boulevard across from Richmond Centre around 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 8.

The cause of fire, which started in a suite on the 14th floor is still under investigation, said Jim Wishlove, Richmond Fire-Rescue’s deputy chief.

Everyone has been evacuated from the building with no injuries reported.

Southbound traffic is blocked off on Minoru Boulevard between Westminster Highway and Granville Avenue.

“We are very lucky that the crews got here really quickly and went up to the suite and attacked the fire really fast with a lot of good, aggressive risk-based decisions and took the fire out quickly,” said Wishlove, adding that the quick actions of the firefighters prevented further damage to the rest of the suite and the building.

He said firefighters are still assessing air quality in the building units around the damaged suite and estimates it will be another hour to three hours until residents can return to their units.
