Bayview Street between No. 1 Road and Third Avenue now has more room for physical distancing.

Pedestrians are being given a wide berth along the waterfront of Steveston Village to practise physical distancing.

The City of Richmond has put in temporary on-street walking and cycling on the south side of Bayview Street between No. 1 Road and Third Avenue to allow pedestrians to keep farther apart as they shop and walk in the village.

While the street remains open to two-way vehicle traffic, the wider pedestrian area spills into the parking lane.

The city created the expanded walkway in anticipation of warmer weather and increased activity, both walking and cycling, explained city spokesperson Clay Adams.

“While we encourage people to get outdoors, we also stress the importance of physical distancing,” he said.

The city will continue to monitor how it works and they will adjust, if necessary, based on how it’s used and feedback they receive from the public.
