While Richmond’s weather forecast looks quite a bit more soggy than snowy, the city has announced its winter weather preparations in the event that flurries and freezing temperatures hit.

If snow appears in the forecast – like it did last weekend – the city will ensure major roads are clear and pre-treated so emergency, public and private vehicles and travel through Richmond.

The city has also stocked up on salt, with 700 tonnes on-site and another 3,250 tonnes available.

If it snows over multiple days, city staff will work 24-7 with crews working 12 hour shifts to lay down salt or brine on the roads.

However, the city also points out that residents have their own role to play in the event of a snowstorm. A bylaw is in place requiring residential home owners and business owners to clear snow and ice from their sidewalks next to their property no later than 10 a.m. daily. If you need help shoveling snow, consider reaching out to a volunteer "snow angel."

The city offers these other tips during winter weather:

  • Snow should be shoveled onto lawns, not onto the street and don’t bury storm grates or gutters when shoveling snow.
  • Avoid using salt or de-icers on new concrete and instead use sand.
  • Clear snow around fire hydrants, if there is one outside your home
  • If possible, park cars in driveways or garages to free up space for snow plows
  • Keep curbs free of debris and bins
  • Have an emergency kit on hand at home and in your vehicle that includes flashlight, warm blankets, drinkable water, medications and food supplies
  • Keep your gas tank full and make sure your car has suitable winter tires
