The 28-year-old from Richmond had a double and home run in leading Canada to an 11-1 win over host Germany in the Classic qualifier final played on Monday. The starting first baseman reached base four times, scoring on each occasion.

He finished the tournament with four home runs and a sizzling.538 batting average, with nine nine runs and 11 RBI.

Van Ostrand hit a double in the second inning and added his home run in the third as the outcome of the game was never in doubt.

"We came here knowing that we had to win three games and we accomplished our goal," said Canadian Manager Ernie Whitt. "I can't say enough about this teamthey're gamers, they're guys that play hard with pride and passion.

"It makes my job easy as a manager and we're just happy that we're moving on."

Van Ostrand is one of 14 players on the roster who helped Canada win gold at the 2011 Pan Am American Games in Lagos de Moreno, Mexico.

He began the season playing for an the independent Sugar Land Skeeters - best known for Roger Clemens' current comeback bid. Van Ostrand later signed with the Washington Nationals and was assigned to their Class-AA team - the Harrisburg Senators where he batted .310 with 10 home runs and 30 RBIs in 80 games.

Langley's Adam Loewen went 2for4 with a homer, two runs and three RBIs against Germany.

The 16-team 2013 World Baseball Classic will take place next March in the U.S. with AT&T Park in San Francisco hosting the semi-finals and championship games.
