Richmond will be well-represented as the Male U16 Team BC gears up for the Western Hockey League (WHL) Cup next week.

The 2023 WHL Cup will take place from Oct. 18 to 22, and three out of Team BC’s 20-strong roster of 2008-born players are from Richmond.

On the list is Delta Hockey Academy U18 defenceman Ryan Lin. Based in Richmond, Lin was selected sixth overall by the Vancouver Giants in the 2023 WHL prospects draft.

Lin is joined on the roster by fellow Delta Hockey Academy U18 teammate and Richmondite Nicklas Kovich. The forward signed with the Red Deer Rebels last month after being selected 75th overall.

Also on the list is Richmond-born forward Ty Bonkowski, currently playing with the Burnaby Winter Club Academy U18 team. Bonkowski was selected by the Kamloops Blazers in the sixth round during the WHL prospects draft.

WHL Cup defending champion Team BC will be battling it out with teams from Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan for the top spot in Red Deer, Alta. under the leadership of head coach Jason Becker.
