After helping the Richmond Sockeyes win the Cyclone Taylor Cup provincial junior “B” hockey championship last month, Jordan Funk is taking his career to Burnaby Mountain next fall.

The high-scoring forward is part of Simon Fraser University’s 2018/19 recruiting class.

The 21-year-old Surrey native began the season in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League with the Kindersley Klippers and Flin Flon Bombers before deciding to come back home and finish his junior career with the Sockeyes where he produce 26 points, including 13 goals, in just 13 games. He added 11 more in as many post-season games.

“Jordan has good size and and really good hands,” said SFU head coach Mark Coletta. “His offensive abilities should serve him well this season” he added. Coletta continues to bring in offensive talent for the coming season given the number of forwards who graduated this past season. “Coming off a championship with Richmond and a few years in the SJHL, that experience will be a big benefit to our team.”

During his junior career Funk collected 136 points (61g 75a) in 210 regular season games. He made earlier junior “A” stops with the BCHL’s Surrey Eagles and Prince George Spruce Kings, along with a brief stint in Alberta with Fort McMurray.

He describes himself as an “offensive player who likes to pass and shoot” which will be important to add to a forward group that will have space for freshmen to jump into important roles.

“My goal is to establish my game right away, and have a successful transition to college hockey.” He plans to study Business Administration while at SFU.

SFU Men’s Hockey was re-established in 2004 and competes in the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League. The program focuses on competition, academics, and community service as its core values.

SFU’s roster features former Sockeye Mac Colasimone who led the team in scoring last season with 27 points  in 23 games.
