Samuel, 48, remains Canada's all-time leader in appearances in FIFA World Cup Qualifiers (36), including those made in 1985 when Canada qualified for the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. As a central defender, he later helped Canada win both the 1988 Sir Stanley Matthews Cup and 1990 Three Nations Cup. He became an honoured member of The Soccer Hall of Fame in 2006.

The McNair secondary graduate was originally drafted by the Vancouver Whitecaps in the 1981 North American Soccer League (NASL) draft but never signed with the club. Two years later he launched his professional career in the Canadian Soccer League with Edmonton. He would eventually head overseas where he would spend the next decade of his career, playing mainly in the Dutch First Division with FC Volendam and Fortuna Sittard.

He retired back in North America in 2001 as a member of the Montreal Impact.

Today, soccer remains a big part of Samuel's life, running his own training academy, based out of Surrey where he has had success working with a number of youth teams. He also is coaching at the senior men's level with Lobbans FC of the Vancouver Metro Soccer League first division.
