Roadrunners earn provincial berth

Intermediate lacrosse team sweeps Burnaby to advance to B.C. finals

Richmond Roadruners are headed to the Provincial Intermediate "A" Lacrosse Championships for a second straight year after sweeping their qualifying series against the Burnaby Lakers.

Richmond produced a 14-9 victory over the Lakers on Monday night at Bill Copeland Arena and will be heading to the same venue - Aug. 3-6 - to battle with three other teams for B.C. bragging rights.

As expected, the regular season champion Roadrunners didn't have too much trouble with the eighth place Lakers, winning the best-of-three series opener 15-10 last Wednesday at Minoru, before their clinching victory five days later.

Tyler Vogrig led the way in Burnaby with five goals, while Reed Leclaire, Jordan Gilles and Spencer Bromley each scored twice. Cody Nass had a goal and three assists. Braeden Jensen, Marcus Quon and Tysen Stoddart also scored. Adam Wagner chipped in with five helpers.

Leclair had four goals in the opener. Wagner, Nass, Tyler Vogrig and Griffen Leclaire had two goals each.

Goalies Ryland Hood and Jack Woodhouse split the work in the crease.

Richmond will be looking to improve on its fourth place finish a year ago when the locals dropped a pair of heartbreaking games, including a 6-5 decision to Coquitlam in the battle for bronze.

Victoria and New West have also advanced, while the battle for the final spot between Port Coquitlam and Coquitlam got underway last night.
