Richmond's first ever amateur wrestling tournament underway at Olympic Oval

Western Canadian Age Class Championships go Friday and Saturday

Over 800 competitors from across Canada and the United States are competing at the Western Canada Age Class Championships on Friday and Saturday at the Richmond Olympic Oval.

 The event, being hosted by the Bhulllar Wrestling Club,  features Olympic freestyle wrestling matches between youth of ages 5-18. Athletes will compete to earn medals for each weight class. The finals, slated to start at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday will be a must-see event, featuring the very best wrestlers from across Canada and the U.S.
 “We are delighted to host this prestigious international event here in the city of Richmond,” said Program Director Jag Bhullar. “The Richmond Olympic Oval is a world-class venue and we look forward to hosting this event here. Being the first of its kind, we are excited to showcase the sport of wrestling in our great city.”

Admission for spectators is free and the championships is sanctioned by the sport’s provincial governing body.
 
“B.C. Wrestling is very excited to support the first major wrestling championships to be held in Richmond. This is an exciting event, which is also a provincial and national qualifying tournament,” added Bhullar.

“With excellent preparation by Bhullar Wrestling Club and the Richmond Olympic Oval, a vibrant host city in Richmond and the participation of hundreds of athletes, B.C. Wrestling is confident the Games will be an astounding success.”  
 
Bhullar Wrestling is a non-profit club which was established in 1976. Today, it is at maximum occupancy, and runs a youth wrestling program free of charge, with the vision of re-establishing the sport of wrestling in the city of Richmond.
