A Richmond student has secured his ticket to the 2023 Canada Winter Games — by competing right in his backyard.

The 2022 Canada Open Karate Championships, Canada's largest tournament, was held at the Richmond Olympic Oval the last weekend.

Burnett secondary and Steveston Karate Club's Haruki Mori was crowned champion in the Jr Boys Kata (form) division. Mori, 16, was previously on the national team and was vying to qualify for the 2023 games.

Another athlete to watch for in last weekend's championships was Olympian Hamoon Derafshipour, who swept up gold in Senior Male Kumite (75 kg) and Senior Male Kumite (Open Weight).
