A Richmond Olympic Oval-based elite youth hockey team will be heading back to Calgary later this month, after being invited once more to a prestigious international tournament.

The Greater Vancouver Canadians U18 AAA hockey team will be taking part in the International Circle K Classic Tournament (formerly the Mac’s Tournament).

It’s the first time in the club’s history to receive back-to-back invitations to attend what many regard as North America’s top invite-only U18 tournament.

Tournament organizers announced teams selected for this year’s tournament on Nov. 21. Three other BCEHL teams have also been chosen to take part in this year’s competition (Okanagan Rockets, North West Hawks and Fraser Valley Thunderbirds).

The weeklong tournament will feature 32 top-tier teams from Canada, the U.S. and Europe.

The GV Canadians attended last year Mac’s Tournament and defeated top-ranked academies NAX, Rink Kelowna, Rink Winnipeg and Alberta U18 Champions Calgary Buffaloes en route to winning the “C” Pool Championship Banner.

It was a huge accomplishment for the Canadians organization and an affirmation of the quality of teams competing in the BCEHL.

“Being invited to the Circle K U18 AAA Tournament is a huge honour and recognition for the hard work these young men have made through their season and hockey playing years,” said Al Wozney, general manager of the Canadians.

“We are excited to be a part of this storied tournament that some of the best players in the world have skated.”

For many young hockey players, the chance to attend the Circle K tournament is a dream come true, with the big stage being attended by scouts from all across Canada and the U.S.

Many NHL stars, such as Sidney Crosby, Jarome Iginla and Patrick Laine have all participated in the tournament in the past.

Games will be played between Dec. 27 and Jan 1, 2023.

Currently, the Canadians are sitting in second place in the BCEHL U18 AAA Division with a record of 12-2-1.
