A Richmond figure skater takes home gold in the International Ice Challenge competition in Austria.

Eighteen-year-old Liam Kapeikis of Richmond’s Connaught Skating Club was crowned champion in the Men’s Singles category.

Even more impressive, Kapeikis only had three weeks to prepare following his performance in the Grand Prix series, where he placed 7th.

“I’m very happy with it, I achieved quite a few of my goals for the competition,” says Kapeikis about his Ice Challenge performance.

During the long program, Kapeikis, who represents the United States, managed to land a quad jump he had never performed before in a competition.

Kapeikis believes winning gold has put him in a great position halfway through the season, and he feels hopeful for his next few events.

Correcting little mistakes, such as rough landings on jumps and cleaning up certain details, is the focus now for the figure skater as he prepares for his next competition, the U.S. National Championships.

After the U.S. Nationals, Kapeikis hopes to participate in the Four Continents Competition in February, where figure skaters from Asia, Australia, North and South America will gather in Colorado to compete.
